From Edge AI to Physical AI: IEI Showcases an Intelligent Robotics Application at AMD Embedded Summit
NEW TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan, September 16, 2026 —— As AI advances beyond recognition and model inference toward interaction with physical systems, integrating AI computing, environmental perception, and device control to enable intelligent robots to perceive and respond to changes in their surroundings is becoming a key focus in Physical AI development. IEI Integration Corp. partnered with CASTEC International Corp. at the AMD Embedded Summit to showcase an intelligent robotics application. The NANO-X100 4-inch single-board computer, built on AMD Ryzen™ AI Embedded X100 Series processors, served as the on-device computing platform for CASTEC’s i-Operator mobile collaborative robot. Combined with the recognition capabilities of the AiEi intelligent vision software platform, the demonstration connected AI inference with robotic control, demonstrating a Physical AI workflow from environmental perception to device response.
Following IEI’s July showcase of the NANO-X100 and CASTEC i-Operator integration at AMD Advancing AI 2026 in San Francisco, the Taipei showcase highlighted the application from a Physical AI perspective, with a focus on human-robot collaboration in smart manufacturing.
From Environmental Perception to Device Response: Demonstrating the Physical AI Workflow
The live demonstration focused on human-robot collaboration and industrial safety in smart manufacturing environments, using the AiEi intelligent vision software platform for environmental perception and personnel detection.
When a person enters a predefined operating area, the system can trigger the collaborative robotic arm on the i-Operator to stop moving and resume once the person leaves the area. When the i-Operator’s AMR platform is performing transport tasks, the system can also stop the vehicle based on predefined conditions if a person enters its travel path, approaches a designated safety zone, or follows closely behind the AMR. Once the condition is cleared, the AMR can resume its original task.
Through the workflow of “Environmental Perception → AI Inference → Device Response → Task Resumption,” the demonstration illustrated how AI recognition results can be translated into device actions, showcasing the application of Physical AI in autonomous mobile robots and smart manufacturing.
Y.T. Lee, Vice President of IEI Integration Corp., said: “The key to Physical AI is not simply increasing edge AI computing capability, but enabling AI computing to run directly on the device itself—processing environmental information and integrating inference results into the control workflows of AMRs and robotic arms. This allows smart manufacturing to move beyond perception and decision-making toward real-world action.”
NANO-X100 as an On-Device Computing Core for Physical AI
The NANO-X100 is a compact 4-inch single-board computer built on AMD Ryzen™ AI Embedded X100 Series processors, integrating heterogeneous computing resources including Zen 5 CPU, AMD RDNA™ 3.5 GPU, and AMD XDNA™ 2 NPU, bringing general-purpose computing, video analytics, and AI acceleration together on a single platform. With workloads distributed across the CPU, GPU, and NPU, computing resources can be allocated according to different application requirements, supporting sensor data processing, AI inference, and system control across a range of intelligent robots and smart manufacturing equipment.
Expanding Robotics and Smart Manufacturing Applications Through Semiconductor Logistics
This collaboration focuses on automated material handling in semiconductor manufacturing. By combining an AMR, a collaborative robotic arm, and the NANO-X100 edge computing platform within the i-Operator, the demonstration showed how autonomous equipment can adjust its behavior based on personnel and environmental information while performing transport and operational tasks.
The same architecture can also be extended to a broader range of robotics systems and smart manufacturing equipment. Moving forward, IEI will continue to deepen its collaboration with AMD and industry ecosystem partners, combining Edge AI computing platforms with device integration capabilities to advance AI from “perception and analysis” toward “decision-making and action,” while deepening practical applications of Physical AI in smart manufacturing environments.
