Designing a computer perfectly suited for crane operations
From afar, the basic design of cranes has not changed in a very long time. This timeless method of moving heavy items from one place to another has, however, gone through major technical advancements, especially with new digital technologies.
Our client needed a computer (actually, they wanted three) for control of various functions of their crane system. The specifications meant that we had to work with specific constr aints on the computers.
The major requirements were CAN-Bus capabilities, support for OpenGL 2.5 and above, various graphics outputs for interfacing with a KVM, and finally the installation would be inside a dedicated e-house, with all the constraints that entails.
This case study explains what we chose for this three-computer system and why we chose those parts.
